Meet
The Doctors

R. Michael Peak, DVM, Dipl. AVDC
Dr. Peak graduated with honors from Auburn University's
College of Veterinary Medicine. He completed a veterinary
dentistry residency at the Dallas Dental Service Animal Clinic
in 2000 and became Board Certified by the American Veterinary
Dental College in 2001. He has served as President of the
American Veterinary Dental College, chair of the Examination
Committee, the Fiscal and Audit Committee, and the Board of
Directors. He has been the Program Chair for the Veterinary
Dental Forum, and chair for the Veterinary Dental Oversight
Group, a committee who oversees the operations for the Veterinary
Dental Forum. He currently is the owner of Tampa Bay Veterinary
Dentistry, a veterinary dentistry referral practice in Largo,
Florida at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists and The Pet Dentist,
Inc. a veterinary dentistry referral practice in Tampa, Florida.
He is married to Erin and they have two sons, Matthew (9)
and Fletcher (6). When not engaged in veterinary dentistry,
he enjoys fly fishing and watching his boys play soccer, baseball,
and flag football.

Dr. Christopher Smithson, Dipl. AVDC
Dr Smithson received his Doctor of
Veterinary Medicine from Auburn University College of Veterinary
Medicine in 2002. He graduated with honors from Auburn undergrad and vet school. Following graduation, he began small animal
general practice in the Tampa Bay area. After seven years in
general practice, Dr Smithson began a formal residency training
program in dentistry and oral surgery.
In 2011, he completed
his residency training at the Center for Veterinary Dentistry
and Oral Surgery in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Dr Smithson has lectured at local and national veterinary meetings and has had articles published in the Journal of Veterinary Dentistry. Dr Smithson is excited to return to the Tampa area
to provide specialized care in dentistry and oral surgery. He
enjoys all aspects of veterinary dentistry but he has a special
interest in oral oncologic surgery and endodontic disease.
In
his spare time, Dr Smithson enjoys fishing, canoeing, camping
and any activity that allows him to be outside. Most of his
time outside work is occupied by spending time with his wife,
Heather, who is also a veterinarian and originally from Tampa,
and their two young girls. |

Dr. Ashley Oakes, Dipl. AVDC
Dr. Ashley Oakes received the degree
of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Florida
in 1989. In 1993 she completed a three-year veterinary dentistry
residency program in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and became a Diplomate
of the American Veterinary Dental College in 1994. While in
Louisiana, she held the position of Clinical Instructor of Veterinary
Dentistry at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary
Medicine, and practiced veterinary dentistry in a private practice
dental referral clinic. After completing her residency program,
she moved to Colorado where she held the position of veterinary
dentist for a nine veterinarian AAHA certified small animal
hospital and referral practice in Boulder, Colorado. She joined
Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists with her husband, Dr. Matt
Oakes, in 1995. |
